Maya Angelou Inspired "Still We Rise" Shoot at City Club of Washington, DC

In celebration of Black History month, I was inspired to do a styled shoot that celebrates the history and the obstacles we have risen above. In doing so, I wanted to inspire couples on the journey as they plan their big day. That's when a light bulb went on! I have always been inspired by Dr. Maya Angelou and her writings, specifically "Still I Rise." So, I dug deeper (and by deeper I mean Google, lol) for more of her poems on love. That's when I came across the quote above.

Similar to the struggles in the black community, you find any couple's journey regardless of race, gender, or identity. It isn't just about the glitz, glam, and romance we all see on wedding day, Pinterest boards, or on social media, but the deep connection and love they share. We all have struggles and obstacles we each must go through in life. If you haven't been through one yet - wait for it, it's coming. The question is, how do you rise above those obstacles?

I'm inspired by couples, who share the kind of love Dr. Angelou wrote about. Those who don't see barriers, those who "jump hurdles, leap fences, and penetrate walls," to fight for their love. Such inspiration fueled the design for this shoot, featured on Black Bride.
